This new film tells the tale of the Battle of Midway in 1942, six months after Pearl Harbor. Back then the US Navy was in bad straits, battleships had been destroyed, carrier lost just months before, another carrier in dry dock in Hawaii. The Japanese were about to launch a large attack but where? US intelligence assets figured out the attack but would the reduced assets and demoralized servicemen be able to defeat Japan at their peak. The Americans did win in the end, but how was the movie? It was OK, very much steeped in the early postwar movies when the heroes were lantern jawed and taciturn. Some of the CGI was done really well, but that money must have run out early because many of the other backgrounds and battle scenes looked more like a videogame. I give it 3 tardy destroyers out of five.
