DECONSTRUCTING the disaster...NETFLIX Sept.16th series on the catastrophic event of the Challenger explosion..when ALL of AMERICA was
in disbelief.
I remember the tragedy clearly,to this day. I was attending a conference between AT&T and US WEST,in a Cherry Creek Conference bldg.We were
working out kinks in our interfacing protocol. Someone interrupted the meeting, said TURN ON THE TV NOW....we all swiveled our chairs as the screen
came on.....nothing else got done that day.
I was at work in the tactical training building at the FLEASWTRACENPAC. I remember ti well because my uncle step daughter was on it . She was the other woman.
I was watching it from a rooftop in Sebring, Florida. When the explosion happened, one of the crew members I was working with said "It's not supposed to do that, is it?". Then we heard the boom. It was surreal...
I FF thru some of the first part......UNTIL it came to launch round table discussions...AT LAUNCH TIME.....the
capsule was cued up and ready for GO,NO GO..there was a some serious questions being thrown around at the VERY LAST MINUTE.....split decision for/against...they KNEW the problems with the O rings at the
table discussion....could NOT come to a consensus. CALLED IN ALL GURUS ON A CONF. CALL and
gave ONE male the decision making YES OR NO....he gave yes, let's do it.
EARLIER, in the doc, they were interviewing (I believe) the daughter of one of those engineers....he told
her WEEKS IN ADVANCE the Challenger had problems and it would be a failure.
The inability to put integrity before "reward" was strikingly sad. The inability to stand up (against ALL) and
state NO...this NEEDS to be corrected, not swept under the rug(O RINGS)......just shattering.
The end result of the WRONG decision? Besides the tragic lose of lives...NASA had alot "xplaining" to
come up with. It gave them a BIG BLACK and bruised ego....the engineers, for the most part, confessed
it was something they lived with everyday of their lives...the regret. HOWEVER,there was one who stated
he would make the SAME decision today, still knowing what he knew back then...he felt the integrity of the
part in question wold NOT malfunction.
The DISCOVERY was the next mission and it was flawless.
HERE is what was disclosed...by the "big boss"....NASA was on a "crunched timeline",meaning logjams
or delays were NOT acceptable...too many missions, not enough time or manpower hours to accomplish
what was expected.
Corp. America has NOT learned the lesson, even today...in fact, it is probable far worse, because of
e commerce and accelerated expectations of delivery dates.
