A former British intelligence officer started writing books after he retired from the service and what awesome books he wrote about the Cold War! My favorite of his is "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold". He better than anyone else wrote so well about the grey shades and uncertainty about intelligence work. Spoilers ahead: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, was another one that kept you guessing throughout the book. Did the organization have a mole? Or did the Soviets just want to convince the Brits that they had moles within their ranks? If they fell for the bait, the suspicion would ruin the effectiveness of the company, and you might also see innocent employees fired and possibly jailed.
Hollywood recognized the quality of his work and made many versions of his books, both movies and miniseries. Please see them if you are interested.
