The attorney for the Evergreen resident accused of fatally shooting two bears cubs last September unsuccessfully tried to have evidence in the case suppressed at a hearing Thursday in Jeffco District Court.
Attorney Harvey Steinberg also argued that his client's statements to deputies should not be admitted as evidence at the trial later this year of Daniel C. Williams. Williams is charged with two felonies — illegal discharge of a firearm and aggravated cruelty to an animal — and four misdemeanors — three counts of black bear hunting out of season, two counts of illegal possession of wildlife, and one count of shooting from a public road. He pleaded not guilty to all charges on Jan. 25.
Williams shot the cubs last Sept. 1 as they were trying to get into his trash. One of the cubs died instantly, and the other was euthanized. The live round that hit the cubs then hit the window of a neighbor’s house.
Williams’ trial is set to begin Nov. 7.
