Business customers of IREA targeted by phone scam

Scammers are targeting business customers of the Intermountain Rural Electric Association again — this time with over-the-phone threats to shut off service.

According to IREA spokesman Josh Liss, scammers are calling businesses and threatening to immediately disconnect power unless a payment is made using a pre-paid credit or debit card.

Liss said the scammers have historically targeted restaurants or other businesses that have a rush hour or service period where a loss of power would hurt business and demand payment via a “Green Dot” Visa card or other pre-paid card.
