Benchmark: Record set for world's longest picnic table

At 810 feet, 8 and 3/8 inches, the world’s longest picnic table could seat a theoretical family of more than 800 people. A person sitting at one end would have to spend more than three minutes walking 300 steps to see her relatives at the other.

And this theoretical family was, briefly, a reality as the Evergreen community came together to celebrate the Guinness Book of World Records’ confirmed longest picnic table ever.

Leadership Evergreen and several other local organizations hosted the event Saturday afternoon at Buchanan fields. Members of Leadership Evergreen’s class of 2015 said the event was almost 18 months in the making, and they chose it as their “class project.”

The organizers announced that, of the 136 total picnic tables making up the world’s longest one, more than 70 had been sponsored by local businesses and organizations. And, after expenses for the table are covered, all proceeds from the event will go toward Evergreen Christian Outreach, the LifeBridge food pantry in Bailey, Loaves & Fishes in Clear Creek, and the Seniors’ Resources Center, they said.

While standing guard over the last 20 or 30 tables, which extended outside of the Buchanan fields area, volunteer Iris Solomon of Evergreen said she was “really excited to be involved with something so incredible,” and was ready to see the table “become official.”

“It’s a great community-building event,” she said. “The people who put this on are so community-driven. (Events like this) are part of the quality of life in Evergreen — there’s nothing like it.”
