When Lori Cuno started her career more than a decade ago, she planned to go into elementary education. A love for helping those in need even led her to take on a couple of long-term substitute positions in the world of special education while completing her master’s degree in counseling.
But Cuno wanted to do more than just teach and found counseling was where her heart was. What started with domestic violence counseling eventually led to work in the mental-health and substance-abuse arenas and opportunities to serve the homeless and low-income families — all of which led to her new role as executive director at PeaceWorks Inc. in Bailey and Conifer.
Since coming on board three months ago, Cuno has undertaken some significant tasks to help grow the organization’s presence and raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence in the mountain area, including hiring several new staff members, moving the organization’s main office to Conifer and planning myriad events and activities for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
Furthermore, Cuno has big plans for the next year.
