Local artist loses guitars, artworks, instruments in fire

Local artist Dave Shelton lost everything in a fire on Sunday — not only his home, but his art, his possessions, and even a baby grand piano.

But the well-known chainsaw artist and guitar maker refused to give in to despair.

“Thank God that I have so many friends and people that love me, because I am just overwhelmed with generosity,” Shelton said Monday morning.

Shelton’s home was destroyed in a suspected arson fire Sunday. Shelton’s roommate for the past year, 36-year-old Robert Leibold, was in police custody on Monday. Shelton was in Winter Park when he received news of the fire, which gutted the two-story cabin and set the surrounding forest on fire before firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.
