Jeffco Public Schools is proposing a plan that will close several schools throughout the district over the next two years as part of its efforts to find $20 million to $25 million for employee compensation in the district budget.
According to Superintendent Dan McMinimee, the proposal will be presented at the school board meeting on Thursday and is part of a wider plan that proposes cuts across the entire school system.
While the district declined to name the schools being proposed for closure and consolidation, McMinimee said the district’s “entire portfolio of 155 facilities” is being considered and that the affected schools were being notified.
Scott Kwasny, spokesman for the Jeffco Education Association, said the teachers union was told that five to 10 schools would be closed over the next two years, but that specifics hadn’t been released as of Jan. 23.
