Jefferson County clarifies rules for shooting on private property

Mountain area residents can discharge firearms on their own private property so long as they take reasonable precautions, Jeffco officials have clarified.

Last month, an Evergreen man was issued a summons for prohibited use of a firearm after he and another man were shooting guns after dark — and while one of them reportedly was intoxicated.

Sheriff’s spokesman Mark Techmeyer said questions about the legality of discharging firearms on private property have been raised frequently in the mountain area, including after the most recent incident.
