Crews are preparing to collect core samples from the soil underneath Highway 74 as part of the preliminary engineering study on north trail around Evergreen Lake.
Chris Vogelsang of OV Consulting informed the Evergreen Park & Recreation District Board of Directors at its regular meeting March 21 that the samplings are needed to determine the stability of retaining wall along the trail.
OV Consulting, Muller Engineering and the Evergreen Metro District began the preliminary engineering study in early February. EPRD Executive Director Ellen O’Connor clarified the crews have until late May to complete the study.
Both agencies approved, so long as the crews work on the road while it’s dry and within a certain times of the day — either between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., or after 8 p.m. but only on weekdays. Vogelsang clarified that the equipment would take up a full lane of the highway, so traffic would be affected.
Vogelsang estimated that the full sampling would take two or three drilling periods to complete. He worried that incoming storms might delay the project, as the crews cannot work if the road isn’t dry.
