The Jeffco District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against a man accused of lighting Roman candles that started the North Turkey Creek Fire on March 22.

Andrew Askins, 18, has been charged with two class-4 felony charges of second-degree arson in connection with lighting fireworks while Jeffco was in a stage-2 fire ban. A warrant was issued for his arrest, but Askins was not yet in custody as of Thursday afternoon.

Although both Askins and Riley Costello, 18, were originally arrested by the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office, charges have been filed only against Askins at this point, said Pam Russell, spokeswoman with the DA’s office.

While helping put out the flames, the passerby said Askins and Costello admitted the fire was started by fireworks, the affidavit reads. The passerby alleges he saw a Roman candle on the premises.
