A Jefferson County Detention Facility inmate died Sunday afternoon at St. Anthony Hospital after being found unresponsive in his jail cell four days prior.

Mark Witkowski, 45, was found with a ligature around his neck by Jeffco deputies doing a jail walk-through at 7 a.m. Wednesday. The deputies began administering CPR and called for additional medical assistance, according to a release from the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office.

The Arvada man was booked into jail on May 29 and was being held in connection with domestic violence charges and a protection order violation.

Although Witkowski is the first to die in a Jefferson County facility in 2017, he is among a string of inmates who've died while in the county jail in recent years. Four others died by suicide in the jail between 2013 and October 2016.
