Two people have died and six were injured Sunday morning after a Chevrolet pickup truck crossed the median on Interstate 70, crashing into several vehicles traveling eastbound.

Around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jeffery Stumpf, 54, of Evergreen was driving on I-70 near the Morrison exit when he veered off the left side of the westbound lanes, across the grassy median and into the eastbound lanes of traffic. According to Colorado State Patrol, his pickup truck struck the front of a Toyota 4Runner, rotating both cars counter-clockwise.

Jodie Stewart, 52, of Idaho Springs, the driver of the 4Runner, died at the scene. Her passenger, a 17-year-old male, also of Idaho Springs, was transported to St. Anthony Hospital with minor injuries.

The five-vehicle crash shut down eastbound I-70 for more than five hours Sunday as Colorado State Patrol worked to clean up the road and investigate the scene of the crash.

It is still unknown what caused the Chevrolet to cross into the eastbound lanes of I-70, but CSP is continuing to investigate.

Coroner: Driver In Fatal I-70 Wreck Was Drunk
August 21, 2017 1:41 PM

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) – The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office says toxicology results on Jeff Stumpf, the driver who crossed Interstate 70 into eastbound lanes killing a mother from Idaho Springs on July 30, was legally drunk. He had a blood alcohol measurement of .146. In Colorado .08 is considered DUI.

Chief Deputy Coroner Dan Pruitt said Stumpf also had evidence of ephedrine, a stimulant used for weight loss and also as a nasal decongestant, in his system. Testing also revealed a metabolite of cocaine, suggesting cocaine use and evidence of THC, pointing to marijuana use.

There is no medical conclusion on his death yet, including whether Stumpf had a heart attack, or whether he had suffered a seizure or was unconscious at the time of the crash.
