Drive starts to fill area food banks

Even though the holidays are in the rear-view mirror, it’s still time to help fill area food banks for the less fortunate.

Volunteers stand with the first week of food donations for four area food banks.

“It’s a lull-in-donation time for us,” said Nancy Judge, who manages the Evergreen Christian Outreach food bank. “Everyone is so keyed in over Thanksgiving and Christmas, and we are so appreciative of the support. But once we get back into our normal everyday routines, donations do dip.”

That’s why Christ the King Catholic Church in Evergreen is sponsoring a food drive through April 1 to help fill the shelves of EChO and three other food pantries — and it hopes the community will get involved.

Called 40 Cans for Lent, the food drive is in its fourth year, growing each year with donations from the church’s parishioners. With the community’s help, organizers hope to far exceed last year’s 4,000 pounds of food.
