As teachers in Jeffco, Clear Creek and across the state plan to walk out of classrooms and demonstrate at the state Capitol later this week, many are asking why.
While the plights of Colorado’s teachers aren’t much different than those walking out or striking in other states — low compensation, inadequate school funding and pension concerns — Colorado’s teachers have four legislative bills in their sights as they prepare to rally. One could negatively modify the state’s public employee pension fund, one could change how state funds are distributed to schools, one lays out the school funding allocations for next year’s fiscal year, and one seeks to prohibit teacher strikes altogether.
Ahead of this week’s teacher walkouts, the Courier takes a look at the four bills driving much of the education conversation in the state right now.
Senate Bill 200: Modifications to the Public Employees Retirement Association to Eliminate Underfunded Liability
House Bill 1232: New School Funding Distribution Formula
House Bill 1379: Public School Finance
Senate Bill 264: Prohibit Public School Teacher Strikes
