A dozen candidates running for Indian Hills Water District seats

More candidates are vying for a spot on the Indian Hills Water District board of directors than in elections past, and many believe it’s a direct result of the district’s contentious year.

In the past year, the Indian Hills Water District, a special district serving about 400 homes and businesses and tasked with providing clean water to residents for domestic and commercial uses and fire protection, has experienced change. Water district board members have resigned; district employees have been fired; and accusations of wrongdoing have been made. But because of this, the community has started paying attention.

Eight of the 12 candidates spoke Monday night at the last of two candidate forums hosted at the Indian Hills Community Center. One candidate was sick and couldn’t attend; another two didn’t attend either of the forums; and yet another has informally dropped out of the race.

Community members filled the room, asking tough questions of the potential new board members. Ensuring the availability of clean water is of utmost importance to all residents, and many pressed the candidates on ways to do this. Additionally, many were concerned with water storage, nitrates, development and board transparency.
