EPRD says 'maybe' to bond/mill levy issue

The Evergreen Park & Recreation District has informed county officials it might put a bond/mill levy question on the November ballot.

However, board discussion suggests that it might not be for the full $34.7 million bond that previously was recommended.

The Board of Directors must make a decision at its Aug. 21 meeting at Wulf Recreation Center. If it does approve a ballot question, the board must specify the exact amount of the bond and the mill levy increase, and for which projects.

Evergreen Park & Recreation District constituents will decide this November whether to pass a $24 million bond to fund major repairs and enhancements throughout the district, and building a gym and additional pool space at Buchanan Recreation Center.

On Aug. 21, the EPRD Board of Directors voted 4-1 to approve having two questions on the ballot — the bond and a corresponding mill levy override. If passed, the district will sell bonds for $23.86 million, and the revenues would go toward funding:

· A two-court gymnasium and indoor walking track at Buchanan.
· Six lap lanes at the Buchanan pool.
· Repairs to the Wulf Recreation Center pool and locker rooms.
· A long-term fix for the Evergreen Lake North Trail.
· An elevator to the second floor of Wulf along with other ADA-enhancements throughout the district.
· Buying the Bullock property adjacent to Buchanan.

A mill levy override of 2 mills will also be on the Nov. 8 ballot. If passed, it would generate about $990,000 in its first year for ongoing operations and maintenance. This would be in addition to the district’s current 4.328 mill levy collected for operations and maintenance.

Altogether, if passed, the $24 million bond and the override of 2 mills would cost approximately $32 per year per $100,000 of a home’s actual value in additional property taxes.
