Like so many of the tattoos he crafts for customers, Jimmy Vegas is more than just a man with a passion for ink. The owner of Conifer’s newest business — Heart in Hand Tattoo and Body Piercing — Vegas is quick to offer a smile or a funny story about his first tattoo or even gush about his son, Gabe, a freshman at Conifer High School this year.
But beyond the green Converse One Star sneakers, black Reno Divorce concert T-shirt, and Harley Davidson hog parked behind the shop is a U.S. Army veteran whose tattooing apprenticeships were interspersed with deployments — from various outposts during the Gulf War to Somalia and Bosnia, over the course of nearly 11 years.
To hear Vegas tell it, tattooing wasn’t something he sought out initially, but was something that found him.
