Wegener cites severance pay as part of withdrawal of resignation

Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener has rescinded his resignation from earlier this month, citing compensation concerns as his primary reason.

In a phone call Thursday, Wegener said that following his resignation, he unsuccessfully attempted to obtain six months of severance pay for Undersheriff Dave Wohlers and Capt. Dan Muldoon — both of whom were set to exit the Sheriff’s Office in tandem with Wegener’s planned departure Sept. 5.

Wegener said that while the severance packages eventually came through, he decided to remain on staff “to make sure my folks are being taken care of,” insofar as working with the Park County commissioners to obtain raises for sheriff’s deputies. According to a memo released by the Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 20, the raises were approved by the commissioners on Aug. 16.

Wegener, who told the Courier at the time of his resignation that he planned to retire to Florida, also addressed rumors that he is no longer a Park County resident and therefore ineligible to continue serving as Park County Sheriff.
