Two longtime firefighters who served the 285 Corridor for more than a decade each have died — one from cancer and another from an aneurysm.
David Haight, 44, an 11-year veteran of the Elk Creek Fire department, died Thursday after a 21-month battle with liver cancer. A New Jersey native and longtime Littleton resident, Haight’s career with Elk Creek began in January 2007 as a cadet in the department’s annual fire academy. Described as selfless and generous by fellow Elk Creek firefighter and best friend Morgan Boldrin, Haight was known for doting on his two 9-year old nieces and for his love of the outdoors.
A celebration of Haight’s life will take place at Drinkwine Family Mortuary in Littleton on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
Matt Scheel, 50, a 10-year veteran of the Elk Creek Fire department and more recently a firefighter with North Fork Fire Rescue, died Wednesday after suffering a cerebral aneurysm at his home in Conifer. A native Coloradan, Scheel was a 1987 graduate of Evergreen High School and an architect by trade.
Remembered as someone who contributed greatly to the mountain-area community, Scheel was a friendly face at Evergreen’s annual Big Chili Cook-Off and regularly helped out at events at Bandimere Speedway and the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo.
