Rental scammers target local property

An Evergreen couple is warning property owners and renters alike of a scam involving fake rental or home sale ads on Craigslist that use information and images pilfered from existing advertisements on real estate websites such as Zillow and Trulia.

Three months ago, Linda and Myron Seveland listed one of their five rental properties on Zillow.com with a rental price of $1,150 per month. A short time later, several people — including a prior tenant who was looking to move back to Colorado — contacted the Sevelands about a series of Craigslist posts that featured the same rental information and images, but with different contact information and a cheaper rental price.

WHAT TO DO
The Jeffco Sheriff’s Office has several recommendations for both renters and property owners to avoid this kind of scam. For renters and for landlords and/or property owners.
