Viering brothers compete with peers from four Evergreen schools in spelling bee

The Viering brothers had each other’s backs during the Evergreen-area spelling bee on Thursday.

Travis, a sixth-grader at Evergreen Middle School, and Dillon, a third-grader at Wilmot Elementary School, competed together, and after each round, the brothers hugged each other.

It is somewhat uncommon for siblings to compete in the area spelling bee, which had students from Wilmot, Parmalee, Bergen Valley and Evergreen Middle schools spelling words after school in the EMS gymnasium in front of families and friends.

Travis eventually won the bee in the 11th round by spelling “ricotta.” Coming in second was Ryan Phoebe from Wilmot.

The students at the Evergreen bee won their school bees, and the area spelling bee was the next stop on the road to the national Scripps Spelling Bee in May in Maryland.
