Morrison considering criminal ordinances

Morrison is looking to enact criminal ordinances for less serious crimes in an effort to keep Morrison police officers in town and those arrested in Morrison out of the Jefferson County Jail.

The effort, spearheaded by Chief George Mumma, includes ordinances that cover smaller crimes that can be dealt with through a ticket and fine. The crimes are those Mumma sees most frequently in town, particularly at the height of the summer tourist season at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre and Bandimere Speedway.

Nothing has been solidified, and the town can reject some or all of the suggested ordinances.

Before making a final decision, Morrison Town Board members agreed they would like to see how many of these crimes the town sees in a year and what the additional cases might do to Morrison Judge Ford Wheatley and the in-town court system, which is open once a week. Mumma will return to present these numbers at a future town board meeting.
