Hans Berg, the Empire man who died in Thursday’s avalanche on Jones Pass, was more than a skier and photographer. He was an engaging and exuberant Clear Creek resident who had a great vision and love for the outdoors.

Local group adopts highway in memory of Empire man
The main stretch of U.S. Highway 40 going through Empire looks more pristine now that hundreds of cigarette butts, cardboard, discarded clothing and trash no longer litter it.
On Saturday morning, a small group of Friends of Clear Creek members met to clean the highway, which the Friends are adopting in memory of Hans Berg, a member and Empire resident who died on March 7 after an avalanche on Jones Pass.
Event organizer Joe “Mojo” Lucas, an Empire resident and friend of Berg’s, said signage will be installed in a few weeks to denote that the 2-mile stretch of Highway 40 running through Empire has been adopted in Berg’s memory.
As part of the Adopt A Highway program, the Friends of Clear Creek will be hosting cleanup events every third Saturday this summer. The final one will be an official World Cleanup Day 2019 event on Sept. 21, complete with a barbecue afterward, Lucas said.
