Tirzah Washington is spreading light in more ways than one.

She’s always loved candles, admiring the way in which their warm light can fill a room and the way in which candles are used by so many different cultures.

“Life just looks better by candlelight,” she said.

But it didn’t take long after Washington began making candles herself to realize just how much wax is wasted.

Thus, she set out to find a way to help. Washington began “Spread the Light” approximately eight years ago, though she officially named it just last year. Through it, she educates people, collects leftover wax and uses it in her many community candle-making workshops, for custom orders, wholesale and more. She works with various churches and restaurants in the area to collect their leftover candles, plus she accepts candle donations from all over the country. Since she began, Washington estimates recycling more than 3,000 pounds of wax.
