Indian Hills Fire trains for mass casualty incident

A cold, foggy morning made the perfect backdrop for a grim emergency rescue training exercise.

The training, held Saturday in the field across Parmalee Gulch Road from Indian Hills Fire Rescue, was meant to simulate a mass casualty. There was a school bus, borrowed from Jeffco Public Schools, a group of “injured” Cub Scouts and neighborhood kids, a team of Indian Hills firefighters and paramedics, and dozens of parents watching.

The call came in just as it would during a real emergency, and first responders from Indian Hills sped across the street in fire trucks and ambulances. They assessed the scene and began to roll out tarps in various colors, each designating a different injury level. Soon after, they started carrying kids off the bus.

While the event may have been harrowing for the parents and first responders, many of whom imagined what it would be like if the emergency was real, the kids participating had a much different view.

“Can I be dead again?” one asked with a grin. Luckily for him, the second run-through was just minutes away.
