Elk Creek Elementary celebrates Day Without Hate

She might be 6 years old, but Lexi Killian is quite self-aware.

“Everybody calls me bossy,” the Elk Creek Elementary School kindergartner said matter-of-factly.

Last Thursday provided the perfect opportunity for Lexi and her peers to work on this, though, as Elk Creek celebrated a Day Without Hate. The annual event is coordinated by the Day Without Hate organization, which is student-led and grassroots. According to its website, the organization promotes nonviolence, unity and respect in schools and began in Jefferson County after Standley Lake High School students asked classmates to wear white in honor of the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech.
