A bill that will provide local school districts the ability to individualize accountability systems officially became law on Monday morning.

The bill signing at West Jefferson Elementary School marked what could have been the first time a law went into effect at the school.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Tammy Story and Reps. Jeni James Arndt and Shannon Bird, creates the local accountability system grant program in the state Department of Education to provide grant money to local education providers that adopt local accountability systems to supplement the state accountability system.

According to EdTrust, an accountability system is the set of policies and practices that a state uses to measure and hold schools and districts responsible for raising achievement levels for all students and to prompt and support improvement where necessary.
