Community's sentiments vary on developing school district properties

Even while some were in favor and others simply wanted more information, tempers flared at last week’s community meeting about development surrounding the Clear Creek School District properties in Idaho Springs.

About 60 people attended the meeting with several speaking in opposition to the development, which currently proposes building apartments on Golddigger Field and the bus barn, repurposing the former school site along Highway 103 and building townhomes along to the south of the school.

Those opposing said a development would deprive current and future students of a playing field and the proposal didn’t fit the character of Idaho Springs.

Others raised concerns about traffic, especially so close to Carlson Elementary School, the residences’ affordability, the hotel site north of the school building, and having residential units that were aesthetically pleasing. And some community members questioned the construction timeframe, which property would be developed first, and whether the community had a guarantee that the former school site would be developed.
