Evergreen residents protest treatment of migrants

Toting signs with messages such as “every person deserves dignity and decency” and “help protect immigrant families,” protestors took to the corner of Evergreen Parkway and County Road 65 last Friday to chide the treatment of migrant children.

The Lights for Liberty vigil, hosted by Evergreen Peace, was held in conjunction with a larger event planned outside of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Aurora. More than a dozen attended the local event, which coordinators said was meant to provide a local outlet for mountain-area residents who couldn’t make a trip down the hill.

The issue has been highly controversial across the country, particularly after the release of a July 2 report from the Office of the Inspector General detailing overcrowding and prolonged detention in facilities in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley.
