Proponents, opponents squabble over dog park proposal

More than 75 people — both proponents and opponents — strongly expressed to the Evergreen Park & Recreation District board on July 23 their opinions of a proposal for an off-leash dog park in Marshdale.

The proponents, many wearing Friends of Evergreen Dog Park T-shirts, said while the proposal was in its infancy, members of the dog park group were EPRD taxpayers, dog parks are a form of recreation, and the EPRD board should support the proposal to provide recreational opportunities for another segment of the area’s population.

The opponents said the property at Evergreen Memorial Park wasn’t a proper location for a dog park because of potential groundwater contamination, noise, traffic and parking issues, among others. They said taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be spent for a park that would benefit a few people and suggested a dog park could be located in Bergen Park or on the north end of Elk Meadow along Squaw Pass Road.

EPRD board members reminded the group after nearly 90 minutes of public comment that EPRD would not run a dog park; instead it has been asked to be the public entity that would sign the lease with Evergreen Memorial Park for the dog park and collect fees.
