The archaeological survey at Russell Gulch Cemetery this past weekend wasn’t the type of thing seen in the “Indiana Jones” movies, but it was meaningful archaeological work all the same.
On Saturday, about 20 professionals, college students and local residents volunteered their time to document and inventory all the marked and unmarked graves at the cemetery, which is about four miles north of Idaho Springs.
The goal of the project, which was funded by a state historical grant, was to identify as many graves as possible and prepare the site for further investigation and preservation, project co-directors Cody Anderson and Michelle Slaughter said.
