It really is the best three seconds each year in Evergreen.
That’s the time it takes for 5,000 plastic ducks to fall from an Evergreen Fire/Rescue truck to the area below the dam for the Dam Ducky Derby. Now in its 10th year, the derby brings several thousand people to downtown Evergreen for children’s activities, vendor booths, food, music — and most importantly, the duck drop.
With a no-duck-left-behind policy, three firefighters followed along to get the straggling ducks moving, so they can be collected and stored until next year’s derby.
The derby is a fundraiser for the Evergreen Downtown Business Association, which sponsors other events throughout the year including the Holiday Walk, Art of the Egg and the Halloween walk.
“Most people don’t quite understand that we’re not a municipality, and we fend for ourselves,” said Jim Sherwood, the duck drop’s emcee and owner of Evergreen Clothing Co. “That gives us a unique community feeling. We have to take care of each other.”
