One person died while two others were transported with injuries on Aug. 7 after a fatal car accident on U.S. 285 near Richmond Hill that closed both sides of the highway.
Bernard Bell, 70, of Cortez died at the scene as the result of his injuries. Another person was uninjured.
According to CSP Trooper Josh Lewis, Bell, driving a 2003 Tacoma, reportedly drove onto the right-hand shoulder on the southbound side of the highway in an attempt to pass the car in front of him. When he tried to get back into the lane, the rear of his truck hit the front of a 2005 Toyota Tacoma, driven by 66-year-old Jesse Boatman of Pine.
“That pushed the 2003 (Tacoma) into the opposite lane of traffic. At that point, the 2003 hit the 2018 (Tacoma, which had been driving northbound),” Lewis said.
The truck driven by Bell rolled, and he was ejected from the vehicle, Lewis said. Bell wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Boatman wasn’t injured.
