Children of struggling families and volunteers shop for school clothes

Shopping for school clothes is a fun excursion for kids, and on Thursday, 65 area children were treated to a shopping spree at the Evergreen Walmart thanks to Evergreen Christian Outreach, the Evergreen Salvation Army Unit and the store.

The children, whose families receive support from EChO, were matched with a volunteer to spend $75 each on school clothes — shoes, socks, underwear, shirts, pants, dresses and jackets. The children’s clothing area of the store was filled with more than 125 shoppers, selecting clothes, getting opinions on how they looked and trying them on.

This is one of Nancy Judge’s favorite days of the year. Judge is EChO’s development director and organizes the event with help from EChO staff. Judge explained that children in marginalized families will have new clothes that fit just in time for school — and who doesn’t like to shop for school clothes?

The clothes money for 50 children came from the Salvation Army’s red kettle bell ringing during the holidays. Walmart donated the money for an additional 15 children, making this the largest shopping spree in the four years EChO has organized the event.
