Municipalities drafting ordinances to address increased bear activity

Idaho Springs and Georgetown’s nighttime visitors are getting to be un-bear-able.

That’s why both municipalities are drafting ordinances to curtail the bears’ behavior by requiring bear-proof trash containers and/or putting out trash the morning of collection.

“In the three years I’ve been here, this is without a doubt a year where we’ve had more occurrences and complaints of bears getting into trash,” Idaho Springs Police Chief Chris Malanka said.

Georgetown, likewise, has seen an increase in bear activity this year, with Town Administrator Kent Brown describing it as an “almost nightly incident now.”
