Officials working to find way to open lake to watercraft

Officials continue to discuss whether Evergreen Lake can be reopened to private watercraft.

The Evergreen Metropolitan District and the Evergreen Park & Recreation District closed the lake to private boats, kayaks, paddle boards and the like last weekend for two reasons:

• EPRD is concerned about safety issues because no one is there to monitor the vessels and make sure people are wearing life vests, which is a liability for those responsible for the lake.

• EMD is concerned about invasive species such as zebra mussels and blue-green algae entering the water because a private watercraft owner unwittingly brings it into the lake from another infested water body.

In addition, the City of Denver asked EPRD to be ready for the replacement of the bridge into the lake parking lot sometime between now and the end of the year. No start date for the work has been identified. The bridge was damaged in the 2013 flood.
