The rev of chainsaws, stacks of firewood and thin layer of dust permeating the air were surely enough to make passersby wonder what was happening at Conifer Community Church on Saturday.
But for Elizabeth, it was enough to make her cry. The Bailey resident and member of Conifer Community Church, who requested to go by a pseudonym, is one of many mountain-area community members benefiting from the church’s firewood ministry.
The firewood ministry, which runs from August to April, serves families in need along the 285 Corridor. On Saturday, the church held its 10th annual Split & Steak fundraiser, in which the community gathers to split wood and then enjoy a steak meal. By now, it’s a well-oiled machine with stations spread across the church grounds and tasks divided among the 220 scheduled volunteers.
Looking around at all of the volunteers was enough to make anyone in need want to cry. But for Davis, it was representative of Conifer’s community spirit.
