The City of Idaho Springs was fined $10,000 after an operator error discharged chlorine into Clear Creek last year that killed at least 38 fish, according to Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment officials.
The city, which has paid the fine, violated the amount of chlorine it was allowed to discharge. Idaho Springs discharged a substance that caused toxicity to humans, wildlife or aquatic life, said Kelly Morgan of CDPHE’s Water Quality Control Division.
Both Morgan and Hillman said the discharge was caused by an operator error at the plant. Hillman explained that employees were working on the plant’s UV system when an attempt to turn the system off malfunctioned, resulting in discharging the 55-gallon drum.
