Sylvia Brockner, an environmental activist, educator and writer since she moved to Evergreen in 1965, celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday, and family and longtime friends joined her for a luncheon at Tuscany Tavern to wish her well.
Brockner’s legacy is based in her love for the outdoors: She and her late husband, Bill, founded the Evergreen Naturalists in 1968, which became Evergreen Audubon. She helped Jefferson County Open Space acquire 319 acres of land that became Lair o’ the Bear Open Space Park. She was a founding member of the Mountain Area Land Trust in 1992, and she was instrumental in ensuring that the wetlands north of the Evergreen Lake House weren’t destroyed when the building was constructed in 1993.
