Family genealogy came to life figuratively speaking on Saturday when Conifer history buffs toured the Conifer Cemetery.

Historic characters and descendants of some of the area’s first families told stories about the people buried in the cemetery — the Kemps, Longs, Blakeslees, Cruses, Fitzsimmonses, Rambozes and McQuearys — with the oldest tombstone of someone buried in 1889. The cemetery on Pleasant Park Road is also known as the Kemp Cemetery, and it contains about 85 graves.

This bi-annual event is sponsored by the Conifer Historical Society, and organizers were pleased with the turnout. About 50 attendees experienced history through stories of the area’s founders.
