The Evergreen Metropolitan District wants a watercraft washing station and more monitoring of Evergreen Lake before it will allow private paddle boards, kayaks and canoes on the water — which means that won’t happen until spring at the earliest.
The prevalence of blue-green algae and invasive species in other lakes and reservoirs in Colorado along with more rigorous water-supply monitoring by federal and state agencies have necessitated the additional precautions when they weren’t needed in the past, according to Dave Lighthart, EMD general manager. That is why EMD closed the lake to watercraft in mid-August.
Lighthart said he would be talking with both the Evergreen Park & Recreation District and Denver Mountain Parks about an agreement on what monitoring of watercraft will entail, who will perform the monitoring and during which months of the year.
EMD has the authority to control watercraft on the lake to ensure drinking water quality, while EPRD operates programs and rents watercraft on the lake. The city of Denver owns the property.
