Evergreen to get mural on CenturyLink building

Evergreen will get its second mural in six months — the latest being done by a Ken Caryl artist on the CenturyLink building on the east end of downtown.

The mural’s theme will be mental health and wellness in keeping with findings of a Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment assessment. CDPHE obtained a $25,000 “Arts in Society” grant from the Redline Contemporary Art Center to fund the Evergreen mural and six other murals around the state.

Evergreen’s first mural this year is the Bear Creek Children’s Mural created by students at Wilmot and The Bergens elementary schools — under the direction of art teacher Elisabeth Marcus — in the walkway that connects downtown Evergreen with Evergreen Lake.

Artist Heleen Koekemoer was in Evergreen on Sunday afternoon to get some ideas about what the community wants to see in the mural, noting that she wants it to have a message of hope for those who have issues with mental illness.

Artist Heleen Koekemoer is painting a mural so large that she moved her master bedroom furniture to the basement to have a larger workspace.

Even so, only four of the 4-by-8-foot panels at a time are set up in the Ken Caryl artist’s home. The mural, which consists of 24 panels, will hang on the CenturyLink building in downtown Evergreen.

Koekemoer, 42, is painting several panels at a time, looking forward to seeing the finished 768-square-foot product when Zuni Signs hangs it later this month.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment commissioned the Evergreen mural through an Arts in Society grant that also will fund six other murals in the state. The murals’ purpose is to provide a visual representation of health and the environment in local communities, according to information from CDPHE.
