County emphasizing sustainability in future recreation projects

With Floyd Hill Open Space Park seeing a tremendous increase in usage since the opening this summer of the Sluice, a downhill bike-only trail, Clear Creek County is moving forward with additional projects at the park and throughout the county with the goal of building sustainable trails.

“We must provide amenities and be able to maintain them properly because maintenance is part of sustainability,” Open Space Coordinator Martha Tableman said. “As we design trails and develop systems, we’re thinking about what we’re building and whether it will last.”

For Floyd Hill, three more trails are scheduled to be built next fall, and Clear Creek officials hope Jeffco Open Space will build a connecting trail from the county line to the Peaks to Plains Trail.

In the meantime, though, Tableman said she’d like to set up a Friends of Floyd Hill group to help county staff monitor what’s going on with the park.
