More packages, holiday, storm combine to slow postal deliveries

The last few weeks have been the perfect storm, both literally and figuratively, at foothills post offices as workers try to get mail and packages delivered in a timely manner.

Local post offices go into high gear during the holidays, said James Boxrud, U.S. Postal Service spokesman, and the combination of a heavy volume of packages plus the pre-Thanksgiving snowstorm and the holiday made delivering mail and packages much more challenging. That’s why delivery has been so inconsistent, he said.

Boxrud said normal delivery times should resume soon. He asked for the public’s help in two ways: When it snows, clear a path to the mailbox so drivers can get there easier, and when you get a notice that a package is available for pickup, pick it up promptly, because the post offices have limited space.
