As families and friends celebrate the holiday season by giving gifts, it’s important to remember that many have given everything for Americans to enjoy the lives they lead.

That was the sentiment behind Clear Creek County’s fourth annual Wreaths Across America event Saturday morning, as volunteers and veterans gathered to honor the sacrifices and to recall that “freedom isn’t free,” as co-organizer Mekiah Fink described.
About 30 people solemnly remembered veterans of all the U.S. military branches during a ceremony at the Idaho Springs Elks Lodge, before dispersing to five cemeteries throughout the county to place about 200 wreaths on veterans’ graves.
