When Marine Corps veteran Sean Carroll walked through the doors of his home in Pine, he walked into a place specifically designed to make his life better.
Carroll, a former lance corporal, was injured while serving in Iraq in March 2004. An improvised explosive device attack led to the loss of his right leg, left thumb and index finger as well as burns across 60 percent of his body.
The custom, mortgage-free home, built on a picturesque mountainside in Pine, was awarded to Carroll and his family via Homes For Our Troops, a nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes for injured post 9/11 veterans. Since its inception in 2004, the organization has built 290 homes across 42 states, including 18 in Colorado.
