Golden’s Jan and Charlie Turner rode the Georgetown Loop Railroad train for the first time a few weeks ago when a friend was visiting from France.

Their friend previously lived in Colorado and knew all about the railroad, inviting the Turners to go on a 3:15 p.m. train ride with Santa Claus.

“It seems like a Christmas thing to do,” Jan said. “It’s so beautiful looking up at the trees and snow. It made it feel like Christmas.”

For the past 11 years, the Georgetown Loop has hosted train rides with Santa and nighttime rides featuring a large-scale holiday light display along the tracks. About 45,000 people rode the Santa trains during the 2018-19 holiday season, General Manager Mark Graybill said, with many from the Denver area but with some out-of-state and international visitors as well.
