Area residents form group to find solutions for vehicle-wildlife collisions

Julie Leidel knew to drive slowly in the fog. She knew to keep her phone put away and to keep her eyes on the road.

“I did everything right,” she said.

On Nov. 16, limited visibility, the time change and a wall of elk led to drivers colliding with a herd in the middle of Evergreen Parkway. Leidel identified darkness and unsafe speed limits as major contributors to the incident.

November and December are especially deadly for deer and elk.

This incident and others like it have prompted 30 area residents to form a task force called the Evergreen Wildlife Crossings group to support the Colorado Department of Transportation and other stakeholders in identifying common-sense solutions to address wildlife-vehicle accidents.

Group hopes to find solutions to wildlife-vehicle collisions

A grassroots group is trying to find ways to lower the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions on Evergreen Parkway between Safeway and Elk Meadow.

The group, loosely called the Wildlife Crossings group, met Thursday night to speak with Jeffco Sheriff’s Office representatives about the issue, which seems to be getting worse each year.

The group created committees to help with outreach to community groups, get the word out about their efforts on social media and to be prepared to help with other projects. Representatives from the group are expected to meet with Colorado Department of Transportation officials on Friday to discuss possible remedies.
